As a society, there are certain things we assume are only available to those who have a lot of discretionary income. Things like beach-front homes, private jets, lengthy vacations to exotic locations are not items that the average person can afford. But what about something like custom furniture for a San Diego home? Should that be lumped into the same category as yachts and vacation homes in the Hamptons?
Not necessarily.
San Diego Custom Furniture: An Affordable Luxury
Filling your entire home with all custom furniture would be something that pretty much only wealthy people can do, but commissioning only a custom furniture piece or two for your San Diego home is something that most people can afford.
Jack Ward, owner of Three Pines Wood Co. a custom furniture maker in Ramona, California says, “Most of our customers are not extremely wealthy people. They are average San Diego homeowners who have chosen to splurge a little on a special piece of furniture for their homes. They are typically very strategic about the piece of furniture they choose for us to build. Sometimes they have us build a piece to fit a specific, oddly shaped area in their home because they can’t find anything in retail stores or online that will work in the space. Or they might have us build a statement piece, like a large dining room table or fireplace mantel that will instantly transform the room in which it is placed.”
According to Ward, custom furniture is an “affordable luxury” for many San Diego homeowners. They may have to save up to make the purchase, or forgo other discretionary spending items for a bit, but it is a purchase that is definitely in reach for many people.
How Expensive is Custom furniture in San Diego?
The price of custom furniture can vary quite a lot. You can purchase a custom dining room table for tens of thousands of dollars, or one for a few thousand. It all depends on the intricacy of the design and the types of materials used.
You should expect to pay at least as much as the prices you’ll see in high-end furniture stores, but the quality will likely be a lot better. In addition, you’ll get a piece of furniture that is completely unique to you!
Don’t go into the process expecting pay prices on par with stores like Ikea or even Pottery Barn. Custom furniture takes time to design and build, and is typically made from higher-quality materials than what you’ll find in retail stores, so you shouldn’t expect it to be the same price as something that is mass produced.
It helps to think of custom furniture as an investment. A quality piece can last a lifetime, and can even be passed down to future generations!
